The Untold Truth About Entrepreneurship
The Harsh Truth
In today’s world, entrepreneurship is often hailed as the best option that can transform the Ghanaian economy. And truly, it holds immense potential. But here’s the truth we don’t trumpet enough, succeeding as an entrepreneur in Ghana is 10 times harder than it looks.
The system isn’t built to support you. In fact, it will test you, frustrate you, and try to break you. You’ll find yourself needing strong networks just to get simple tasks done. At certain stages, if you don’t know the “right people,” basic approvals could take months or never come at all.
Patience, Preparation, and the Reality Behind the Glamour
If you don’t have a solid support system, don’t be too quick to quit your 9–5. My 9–5 job was the very platform that gave me the financial stability, discipline, and relationships to successfully launch my business. Don’t rush into entrepreneurship, be patient. Yes, the vision will make you restless, but if you’re not grounded in reality, that same vision can break you.
Forget the glamorised stories you hear about entrepreneurship. Reality on the grounds is different; it’s a matter of life and death. Starting a business is one thing, but sustaining it? That’s the real war. Ask yourself: how many privately owned businesses in Ghana have lasted over 20 years? Very few!
Building with Integrity and Following Your Own Path
Don’t burn bridges in your rush to start something new. Learn where you are, grow with integrity. If your current employer or boss has been good to you, leave on a good note. A good leader will understand your desire for growth and may even bless your journey and if things don’t work out, you may still have a door open to you.
Entrepreneurship is not for the weak at heart. And don’t be misled by those who appear successful but depend 90% on government contracts that are handed to them because of their affiliation to the party in power. Their journey isn’t your journey. Trying to imitate them without their connections will only fast track your journey to the grave.
Entrepreneurship can transform your life and your generation. But it demands patience, capacity, and character. Serve with humility, grow with wisdom, and remember, your breakthrough will never come too late just because you chose to serve another man’s vision first. That service might be your greatest preparation.

Here are five deep but painful truths about entrepreneurship that people often overlook:
1. Not Every Passion Pays
Just because you love doing something doesn’t mean it will become a profitable business. Many entrepreneurs start with passion, but without a viable market or proper structure, the business struggles or fails.
2. You will Lose More Than You Gain in the Beginning
Entrepreneurship often demands sacrifices, sleep, time with loved ones, financial comfort and even your mental peace. The initial stages are full of losses before gains start to show.
3. Support Will Be Scarce When You Need It Most
You’ll be surprised how many friends, family, or partners withdraw when things get hard. Many people will only believe in you when the results start showing. Until then, you’re on your own.
4. Success Does not Mean Peace
Making money or building a successful brand doesn’t eliminate problems. In fact, new levels bring new devils, more stress, bigger decisions and heavier responsibilities.
5. Hard Work Doesn’t Always Guarantee Results
You can give your best, sacrifice everything, and still fail, that’s life and partly because of market conditions, bad timing, betrayal, or unforeseen setbacks. Entrepreneurship does not reward effort alone; it rewards wisdom, timing, persistence, resilient spirit, and adaptability.
